At the beginning of the 20th Century, scientists have discovered that certain plants (soy, alfalfa, red clover, green tea, and kudzu) contain phytoestrogens, strong substances similar to the feminine hormones. It was also noticed that osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and cancer incidences are lower than within countries who consume soy and in particular, the isoflavones which it contains (genistein, glycetein, daidzein). In the 70-ties, researchers have synthesized a similar molecule to the natural isoflavones, which possess the benefits of estrogen and this without side effects.

What is ipriflavone?
Ipriflavone is a phytoestrogen from one of the 3 soy isoflavones. Numerous studies lead on post-menopaused women and on people suffering from osteoporosis; have permitted to evaluate the beneficial effects of ipriflavone on the health of the bones. These positive results on the bone density have also been demonstrated in laboratories and in clinic studies.

How does it work?
Bones renew themselves constantly within a continuous process of formation and resorption. At certain stages of life, it can occur that the balance between bone mineralization and bone resorption is disturbed. The osteoblasts (exterior cells) are responsible for the bone mineralization. The osteoclasts, which are found under the osteoblasts, are responsible for the bone resorption. When the calcium levels in the blood diminish, the osteoblasts change their form, which exposes the osteoclasts and allows the calcium to move from the bones to the rest of the body. Researchers suggest that ipriflavone seems to inhibit the activity of the osteoclasts, which allows them to slow down the bone degradation. Besides, ipriflavone could stimulate the activity of the osteoblasts responsible of the formation of new bones. Let us emphasize that ipriflavone doesn’t only inhibit the degradation of existing bones, but also encourages the formation of new bones.

Where is it efficient?
Numerous clinic essays made in Italy, of which several lasted 2 years, have regrouped about 2,500 participants. The results demonstrate that ipriflavone (600 mg/ day) ipriflavone supplemented with calcium, can prevent the apparition of osteoporosis within menopaused women, notably when associated to a calcium supplementation (1,000 mg/ day). Certain studies indicate that ipriflavone can slow down or block the bone loss within people suffering from osteoporosis, including when the disease is caused by hemiplegia or by certain medication which have been used, for example, in cases of prostate cancer. Preliminary studies indicate that ipriflavone can have a positive effect against certain bone pathologies such as Paget’s disease, hyperparathyroidism and otosclerosis.

Is there an efficient option to substitutive hormone therapy?
Scientists have studied the effects of estrogen, together with ipriflavone, on the preservation of the bone mass after menopause, as well as on the other disorders linked to the characteristic hormonal changes of women at this stage of life (hot flushes, etc.). It has been observed that this association allows taking lower doses of estrogen than those usually given in within classical replacement hormonal therapy.
